How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in a Job Interview in the Netherlands
It sounds simple.
“Tell me about yourself.”
Yet this is one of the questions professionals struggle with most.
Some begin with university.
Others walk through every role chronologically.
Some speak for eight minutes.
Others give an answer so short that the interviewer learns almost nothing.
A strong answer should create direction.
Do not tell your biography
The interviewer does not need your life story.
They need context.
Your answer should help them understand who you are professionally and why this conversation makes sense.
Think of it as three parts.
Your current professional identity.
The experience most relevant to the opportunity.
The direction you are moving towards.
Start with who you are now
For example:
“I am a commercial operations professional with eight years of experience working across technology and professional services.”
Immediately, the listener understands the frame.
Then add the most relevant part of your experience.
What have you built?
Improved?
Led?
Solved?
Finally, connect it to the opportunity.
Why does this role make sense now?
Keep the thread visible
Your answer should help the interviewer think:
“I understand this person.”
Not:
“I have heard a lot of information, but I am not sure what it means.”
